A remastered edition of the first three Spyro the Dragon games is reportedly coming to the PlayStation 4 as a timed exclusive.
According to Kotaku UK (via IGN), the remastered trilogy will include Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. All three games were originally released back on the PlayStation 1 in the late ’90/early 2000s and the updated versions will reportedly feature all-new assets, lighting, animations, and cinematics; as well as a remastered soundtrack, overhauled save systems, and PlayStation 4 Pro support. The report claims that the game is expected to be officially announced next month.
The remastered trilogy will reportedly be a PS4 exclusive for one year, and is expected to release on other platforms in 2019. The report claims that the exclusivity deal is similar to the one Sony made with Activision for the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy in 2017. That game is expected to come to platforms such as the Nintendo Switch and PC later this year.
According to one Kotaku source, the Spyro trilogy is set for a September release, which would line up with the series’ 20-year anniversary. The trilogy’s original developer, Insomniac Games, does not appear to be involved, with development duties reportedly being handled by Vicarious Visions – the same Activision-owned studio behind the N. Sane Trilogy.
Activision has not responded to Kotaku UK’s report.
