Ben Affleck Explains His Approach To Writing ‘Batman’ Solo Movie

As director, co-writer, and star of the upcoming Batman solo film (which currently doesn’t have an announced release) Ben Affleck is understandably very concerned with respecting the source material while forging his own unique spin on the character. As such, he claims that ‘The Batman’ (unofficial title) will feature an original story, but that it will also draw upon Batman comics lore for inspiration where needed.

“I think what I would do, what I probably would do, is in some ways what Zack did with this movie [Batman v Superman], which is to borrow certain things from the great comic books, but create an original story around it because I wouldn’t want the fans to already know the story and be familiar, but I would borrow, steal, great things that have been done before in the comics.” [Via: ComicBookMovie]

Fortunately, Affleck will be joined by writer and Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics Geoff Johns on the project, as Johns will be serving as a co-writer, so he’ll have someone with a wealth of DC Comics knowledge at his disposal to make sure the film doesn’t overlap too much with existing Batman stories.

The question now is what specific comics Affleck will draw from for inspiration. The safe bet is probably the “Red Hood” arc, as Batman v Superman hinted at it already with the Jason Todd Robin suit. Whatever route he takes, there’s no doubt that Affleck has a staggering amount of material to sift through for ideas, given that Batman has been around for 75 years and counting.

Ben Affleck will return as Batman in Justice League Part One, which hits theaters November 16, 2017.
