Rick Moranis Breaks His Silence On ‘Honey, I Shrunk the Kids’ Return

Rick Moranis is back, and the nerd in me couldn’t be happier.

As reported yesterday by Deadline, SCTV alum Rick Moranis, best known for roles in Ghostbusters, The Flintstones, and Spaceballs, has decided to come out of retirement to reprise his role as Wayne Szalinski in the Honey I, Shrunk the Kids sequel, Shrunk. Original director Joe Johnston will also return to helm the project, with Todd Rosenberg writing the screenplay. The upcoming sequel will follow Szalinski’s now-adult son, played by Josh Gad, who, like his father, has become a scientist and accidentally shrinks the kids.

Yesterday evening, Moranis took to Twitter to officially announce his return, posting a Honey, I Shrunk the Kids gif along with the caption, “HONEY, IM BACK.”

The beloved Canadian actor has been retired for years, stepping away to raise his kids. Since his departure from on-screen work in 1997, Moranis has kept busy with voice-over work in such films as Brother Bear and our personal favorite, The Animated Adventures of Bob & Doug McKenzie.

Directed by Joe Johnston and starring Moranis, Matt Frewer, Kristine Sutherland, Thomas Wilson Brown, and Jared Rushton, Honey I Shrunk the Kids was released in 1989. The science fiction film was a box office success, grossing $222.7 million against an $18 budget, and spawning a franchise, including two sequels and TV series.

What are your thoughts about the upcoming release of Shrunk? Are you happy to hear Moranis has finally come out of retirement, or do you think this is a one time gig? Let us know in the comments below.
