Robert Kirkman Discusses The Possibility of a ‘Walking Dead/Fear The Walking Dead’ Crossover

When spinoff Fear The Walking Dead hit AMC, fans of the hit zombie apocalypse show finally got a glimpse of how another part of the United States was dealing with the crisis. Turns out, the answer is: not very well.

The spinoff starts in Los Angeles, then moves out to the ocean, as they characters head to Mexico where they will (hopefully, but probably not) find some sort of sanctuary. Meanwhile, Rick Grimes and co. are on the other side of the country trying to survive. They started in Georgia before making their way North to the Alexandria Safe Zone in Virginia, near Washington D.C.

Although the shows definitely exist in the same universe, creator Robert Kirkman said that a crossover event would be extremely unlikely.

We’re already on season seven and this one’s on season two and that would be crazy. As far as if those characters will ever encounter each other, I mean, they’re in the same universe so it’s completely possible. Geographically, they’re no where near each other so it would be somewhat farfetched if group A were to somehow encounter group B unless over the course of many, many, many, many seasons somehow it made sense. With resources and transportation at a premium (plus all the zombies and humans trying to kill everyone), any sort of meet up between the show’s respective characters would be a pretty far fetched. Kirkman also says that the timelines are all messed up, meaning that Fear The Walking Dead is still a few years behind the original show.

“They’re definitely not in the same timeline just because Fear the Walking Dead starts while Rick grimes is in a coma,” Kirkman explains. “So, Fear the Walking Dead season one to a certain extent happens inside of season one of The Walking Dead.”
